Season 57 - 2018/2019
Lysistrata Aristophanes (Translated by Sarah Ruden) Directed by Michael Blum / Darlene Harris 09/21/18 - 10/14/18 Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 2pm Lysistrata, originally written and performed in 411 BCE, is considered by many to be the greatest work of the ancient comic playwright Aristophanes. In the play, as part of her extraordinary mission to stop a grinding, never‑ending war, Athenian matron Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sex and to capture the Acropolis, thus bankrupting the war effort and reducing men to comic deprived desperation. Bawdy, unrestrained and surprisingly modern in its world view, Lysistrata is performed in a recent translation by Sarah Ruden that critics call “a perfect Lysistrata for the new millennium.” Ten Spot Thursday: Sept 27, 2018 All tickets for this performance just $10 Talk Back: Sun, Oct 7, 2018 Post Show discussion with cast & director following the matinee performance. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice... or take a stand... or turn around and go back. These are the stories and characters of today. With a rousing score that blends elements of pop, gospel and jazz, featuring tight harmonies and darling vocals, Songs for a New World transports its audience, as each character ‑‑ in their own way ‑‑ takes hold of that one moment and enters a new world. Ten Spot Thursday: Nov 8, 2018 All tickets for this performance just $10 Talk Back: Sun, Nov 18, 2018 Post Show discussion with cast & director following the matinee performance. As inspiration for his new novel, fussy and cantankerous Charles Condomine invites the wonderfully eccentric medium, Madame Arcati to perform a seance in his house. When things go terribly awry, Charles suddenly finds himself caught in an improbable love triangle between his naive living wife, Ruth, and his decidedly "spirited" former wife, Elvira. Ten Spot Thursday: 12/20/18 All tickets for this performance just $10 Talk Back: Sun, Jan 6, 2019 Post Show discussion with cast & director following the matinee performance. BUY TICKETS Pygmalion George Bernard Shaw Directed by Sherrionne Brown 02/15/19 - 03/10/19 Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 2pm Eliza Doolittle, an intelligent, but poor woman who sells flowers . . . crosses paths with Henry Higgins, a boorish, insensitive, but brilliant linguist who studies phonetics. He realizes we are all equal under the skin and that social class is a matter of skilled behavior. What starts as a phonetic experiment becomes a social experiment. As these two headstrong people spar, we follow Eliza through to her emotional and financial independence, as Eliza herself realizes she was already a lady. The sparkling wit and biting humor of Shaw's script has made Pygmalion into a classic which has endured for over a century, still speaking to us about the false constructs of social class and wowing us with a portrayal of a strong woman who overcomes the conventions of her time. The outspoken, wise‑cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to all who will listen. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves through life and tragedy, with a sense of humor, and Southern Charm. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the everyone, but also draws on the underlying strength - and love - which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
