Spotlighters Theatre - ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Associate Artistic Director (AAD) is responsible for developing and implementing the artistic vision and focus of Spotlighters Theatre in conjunction with the Artistic Director and the Artistic Team. The AAD works with the Managing/Artistic Director and the Board of Directors to ensure that Spotlighters Theatre is guided by its mission, vision and values and realizes its goals for artistic excellence, community service, education, financial stability, fund raising and audience engagement. The AAD is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors. The AAD reports directly to Artistic Director and The Board of Directors, and works in close association with the Artistic/Managing Director.
This is a part time position with variable hours (estimated at 20hrs/week), including nights and weekends.
EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate must possess 6 years of combined education and experience. While a four year degree is not required, a bachelor’s degree within theater, drama, arts administration or a related field of study is preferred. Candidates must also possess experience as an artist and/or artistic or production management. The 6 year requirement maybe in any combination of education or experience (Example: 4 year degree with 2 years experience; or 2 year degree, with 4 years of experience.)
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY / DUTIES:
- Recruits, oversees and mentors artistic personnel, including directors, performers, designers, and stage managers.
- Recruits, oversees and mentors key technical personnel, including Production Manager and Technical Director.
- Designs, implements and evaluates workshops and classes in theater disciplines, with a focus on educational programs.
- With Executive Committee, develops production budgets and marketing strategies to present to the Board of Directors for final approval.
- Acts as a spokesperson for Spotlighters Theatre’s artistic purpose via speaking engagements, public and social appearances, and, as requested, at fund raising events and solicitations.
- Fosters the development of good relations with other cultural organizations by participating in meetings and joint activities where appropriate.
- Reports to the Artistic Director and /or Board of Directors on a regular basis to give an update on artistic activity at scheduled board meetings.
- Responsible for the maintenance of written procedures manual for directors and production staff.
- May direct at least one production per season.
- Serves on the Play Selection Committee to assist to choose each season of plays and presents to the Board of Directors for approval. This may also include special events such as Cabarets or fund raiser performances.
- Works with the Board of Directors and Managing/Artistic Director to coordinate donor development and fund raising activities to ensure Spotlighters Theatre’s financial stability and promote sustainability.
- Oversees auditions and related activities as needed.
- Keeps current with play literature, both local playwrights and national published works.
- Oversight for assessing needs of each production with respect to requirements for theater purchases and changes to the physical space.
- Oversees the scheduling of the calendar year, in conjunction with Managing Artistic Director: season productions, auditions, workshops, special events.
COMPENSATION / BENEFITS:
Position is considered an executive position with a salary paid bi-weekly.
Benefits: Vacation and Sick Leave provided. No healthcare provided.
It is expected that the position will require 20 hrs/week on an average with some weeks requiring more and some less.
Salary Range starting at $20,000 / year.
