DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS . . . Rikki Lacewell Howie
Clyde’s is a story about second chances, survival, and the simple act of dreaming big in a world that tries to shrink you. Inside the walls of a truck-stop sandwich shop, five characters wrestle with their pasts while navigating the often complicated road toward redemption. But Lynn Nottage, in her brilliant way, doesn’t let the heaviness consume us. She fills the space with humor, rhythm, and the poetry of aspiration—even when the odds are stacked high.
At Spotlighters, a space known for intimacy and immediacy, I wanted this production to feel close, honest, and unvarnished. We stripped away excess to let the rawness of each moment speak. The set is simple, the world familiar, the focus deeply human. These aren’t just characters—they’re people who feel like they could walk off the stage and into your neighborhood. Each of them is fighting for a sliver of dignity, a taste of something better, and it’s that hunger—both literal and metaphorical—that drives this story forward.
I’ve asked this cast to bring themselves fully to the work, not to perform their roles, but to live them. This isn’t a show about caricatures—it’s about complexity. And here, in this intimate setting, every look, breath, and silence carries weight.
I’m grateful to Spotlighters Theatre for embracing this story and for continuing to uplift plays that center Black voices, complicated lives, and radical hope. In this kitchen, the sandwiches matter. But the people matter more.
Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show — and maybe leave inspired to dream up your own perfect sandwich.
