Theatre Educational Workshops -
Winter - Spring 2012
Spotlighters Theatre is offering a series of acting and technical workshops,
for folks age 16 years and up. These workshops are designed to enhance an
actor’s understanding of their work on stage, assist a playwright with
addressing the ‘starting’ process, and give stage managers and crew the
essential skills needed to run and manage a full scale production.

Most groups will be limited to 12 - 15 participants, so register early. Some classes may have smaller capacities, so please note any
restrictions.

An introduction to writing for the stage -- how play writing is different than every other kind of writing; explores the craft of play writing and the tools and techniques one can use to create a script other theatre artists can use to create a play, live onstage
Playwrights Series - Getting Started
Sat - Mar 3rd 10a - 2:30p
You want to write a play -- how do you get started? Subjects covered include formatting, point of attack (opening with a bang), engaging your audience, exposition.
Playwrights Series - I've Started a Play but Now I'm Stuck!
Sat - Apr 14th 10a - 2:30p
Mark explores with you various tools and techniques that you can use to keep moving forward to complete a draft of your play.
Playwrights Series - Marketing for Playwrights -- How to Get Produced
Sat - May 5th 10a - 2:30p
You've written a play -- now what? Mark Scharf presents an organized, methodical approach to getting that first production (or the second, third, fourth...)

Brush Up Your Monologue
Tues - Feb 7th 7p - 9:30p
Instructor: CJ Crowe
Students with a prepared monologue will receive coaching and direction from
CJ Crowe, founder and director of Do or Die Murder Mystery Productions, and
local stage director and actor, to refine and improve their presentation of a
powerful monologue that will showcase the actor’s talents to get cast. Limited
to 8 participants.

The Actor On Stage - A Workshop Series
Instructor: Fuzz Roark

The Actor Onstage - - Relaxation
Saturday, Feb 11th, 11am - 2pm
Will focus on developing relaxation techniques to allow the actor to utilize their entire body for the performance.
Will identify a variety of tension points that each individual actor has, and find ways to overcome these roadblocks to a a solid, comfortable and believable performance.
The Actor Onstage - - Breath / Voice / Projection
Saturday, Feb 18th, 11am - 2pm
Will focus on developing breathing skills to ‘speak to the line’ and ‘speak to the room’
Will work with individual actors to find voice placement for the best character sound, and for vocal health.
Will develop skills to be heard without amplification and to develop a crispness and clarity in stage speech.
The Actors Onstage - - Connection / Listen, React, Respond
Saturday, Feb 25th, 11am - 2pm
Will focus on the actor being present and engaged when on stage, and to be in an active relationship with other actors and the audience during a performance.

Improve through Improv

How to use basic improv skills to improve an actor’s stage performance, while remaining true to script and blocking. Learning to be actively engaged with the thread of the story.

Stage Management Workshop
Mar 10, 2012 - 10am - 2:30pm
Instructor: Kristen Bishel Kelso
Taught by Equity Stage Manager, Kristen Bishel, this workshop will prepare the novice or experienced Stage Manager for working on a full scale production. This is a practical hands on workshop, designed to provide the tools (forms, checklists, etc) to help a new Stage Manager survive a large production, and keep track of the thousands of details. All participants are provided hard
copies and a cd rom of the various forms and checklists discussed. Limited to 8 participants.

Intro to Improv

Instructor: Ron Burr
The Basics of Comedy Improv – the fun and games of stage improv. Taught by Ron Burr, creative director of DropThree Improv, this workshop will provide the improv actor with experience and skill in a variety of improv games, but also a skill set for improv work in comedy sketches.

An introduction to basic comedic acting. Designed for the actor interested in doing comedy work, and improving their comedic timing skills, as well as delivery and physical response.

Instructor: Ron Burr
The basics of performing short sketch comedy. Utilizing improv skills and understanding the concepts needed to work with a small ensemble of actors in a comedy short sketch.

Nothing to Fear from Shakespeare
Tues - May 8th 7p
Instructor: CJ Crowe
Shakespearean acting in more modern terms and takes away the intimidation factor. This is really just a dipping a toe in the water to prep actors who may want to take a more detailed Shakespeare course.

Movement for the Actor

Instructor: Marianne Angellela
Three workshops on theatre movement and body work. These workshops will address a variety of techniques for actors to understand how the body moves and also explore a variety of movement interpretations. This workshop will assist the actor in finding a physicality for their character, and for making distinctions in a variety of movements and body positions.

Adult Theatre Education - - -
Spotlighters Theatre offers workshops in acting skills for teens (16 yrs) to adults
during the year. These workshops vary from Introductory sessions to more advanced work on topics such as Stage Combat, Shakespearean acting, Comedic acting and more.
