BUS STOP

Picture
Oct 12 -  Nov 11,  2012
by William Inge
directed by Fuzz Roark
The first play presented by Audrey Herman and the Spotlighters, opening on Oct 12, 1962; we revisit William Inge's masterpiece.  In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and the weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning.  Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursued, made love to and finally kidnaped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. The belligerent cowhand is right behind her,  ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she's ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, "Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I'm gonna end up in Montana …" As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the café also gets her first taste of romance.

Mame!

Picture
Nov 23 - Dec 23, 2012
book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee
music & lyrics by Jerry Herman
directed by Allan  Herlinger
musical direction by  Michael Tan
choreography by Jillian Bauersfeld
The musical revolves around the antics of Mame Dennis, a fun-loving, wealthy eccentric with a flare for life and a razor sharp wit. Her life is suddenly changed when she becomes the guardian of her late brother's only child, Patrick Dennis. Her adventures take us from the speak-easies of the roaring 20's to the depression following the great Stock Market crash. She is rescued by a wealthy Southern plantation owner, marries and is widowed suddenly, and through it all, manages to keep things under control. With some help from her dearest friend, Vera Charles, she helps keep things at 3 Beekman Place a rousing  free-for-all!

Rose's Dilemma

Picture
Jan 11 - Feb 10, 2013
by Neil Simon
directed by Roy Hammond
In her beach house in the Hamptons, celebrated writer Rose Stern stands at a crossroads: she
hasn't written anything in years and money is getting short. Her former lover, literary lion Walsh McLaren, offers her - from beyond the grave - an opportunity to regain her celebrity and gross millions. It's not going to be easy and a "ghost" writer is required setting in motion another touching and unpredictable romantic theatrical comedy by America's premier Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright inspired by the true-life romance between Lillian Hellman and Dashiell Hammett.

Last Five Years

Picture
Mar 1 - Mar 24, 2013
book, music & lyrics by  Jason Robert Brown
directed by Fuzz Roark
musical direction by  Kevin Roland
An emotionally powerful, yet intimate musical about two twenty-somethings who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. Struggling actress Cathy tells her story backwards from their break-up while writer Jamie, his career booming, travels forward from their first date.

Equus

Picture
Apr 5 - May 5, 2013
by Peter Shaffer
directed by Sherrionne Brown
Peter Shaffer's acclaimed Equus, written in 1973, tells the story of a child psychiatrist's attempt to treat a seventeen year old boy who has blinded six horses in a violent fit of passion. The play's action is something of a detective story as the psychiatrist, delving into the boy's pathological religious and sexual fascination with horses, comes face to face with his own self doubt and sense of purpose.
ADVISORY:  Contains nudity, and adult language and content.

A Delicate Balance

Picture
May 31 - June 30, 2013
by Edward Albee
directed by Fuzz Roark
A Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award Winning Play.  Wealthy middle-aged couple, Agnes and Tobias have their complacency shattered when Harry and Edna, longtime friends appear at their doorstep. Claiming an encroaching, nameless "fear" has forced them from their own home, these neighbors bring a firestorm of doubt, recrimination and ultimately solace, upsetting the "delicate balance" of Agnes and Tobias' household.

"Powerful...A beautiful play filled with humor and compassion, and touched with poetry...[with] the stature and eloquence of a classic."
 - New York Daily  News
 "An evening of theatrical fireworks."
 - The New York Times

Fiddler on the Roof

Picture
July 12 - Aug 4, 2013
book by Joseph Stein
music by Jerry Bock
lyrics by Sheldon Harnick
directed by Jillian Bauersfeld
musical direction by Michael Tan
This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye, a milkman, trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages.
